WHY DO YOU NEED MAGENTO 301 REDIRECT?
After installing Magento system, you will eventually need to make Magento 301 redirect to run your eCommerce website on the Magento CMS platform. A Magento 301 redirect makes sure that your page is always on the move, which means when visitors click on search engines, home button or any other category on your website, they will be automatically sent to the corresponding new page. If you do not care about handling Magento 301 redirect, visitors will find your website as “404 – Page Not Found” error, which causes you to lose valuable customers.

Permanently change the URL of a page for any reason
So now you need to install Magento 301 redirect, what should you do?
Do not worry, Magento 301 redirect can be installed instantly with a file called .htaccess.
301 redirects can be made as many as you want, however, we advise you to not redirect to a redirect, that redirects to another redirect because search engines might be broken for making too many jumps.
There are two easy ways for you to manipulate the .htaccess file:
Magento’s built-in redirect system (manual method)
Magento extension (especially useful for bulk redirects).
Magento’s Built-In Redirects
- Go to Catalog > URL Rewrite Management
- Click “Add URL Rewrite”
- From “Create URL Rewrite,” choose “Custom”
- Edit the URL rewrite information forms. The ID Path and Request Path are the old URL (including the .html). The Target Path is the new URL. In the “redirect” field, choose Permanent (301)
Magento 301 redirect automatically or on-the-fly is based on how your Magento is set up.
For example, if you change a category or product URL, it may redirect it without any effort on your part. You can test this by pasting the old URL into a new browser window and attempting to load the page. Your account needs to be set up to allow you the ability to edit links. Some Magento webmasters set up their systems so that a user can change the URL for a product using a field.
What if you need to create dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of permanent redirects. The manual method like the first one might consume much precious time of yours. So we recommend an extension for bulk redirects named “Optimise Web’s Mass 301 Redirects.”
Optimize Web’s Mass 301 Redirects Magento extension can deal with 301, 302 (302 redirect is used when you change URLs temporarily) or any status of redirects. You can easily create a simple CSV (comma separated values) file in a text editor, MS Excel or spreadsheet. This plugin lets you upload the CSV into Magento, which help you shorten your time with tons of 301 redirects.
You can choose any method below to install it:
- Legacy: old-URL; new-URL
- Redirects System 1: old-URL, new-URL,status_code (this is much easier to edit because it gives the CSV file 3 columns).
- Query String Based Redirects: Perfect if your old website used search string queries. Also great for Magento sites that have stopped a Google Adword campaign, deleted a product attribute, and in other situations. It allows the use of a wildcard to match many similar searches.
Remember that using formulas in some spreadsheet cases, you will able to save lots of time.
Note that the CSV file needs to be cumulative, which means you have to keep or re-download your CSV file, and add rows when you want to add more redirects. Your new CSV file will overwrite your old CSV file. You can easily upload your CSV file from within the extension.
You can either use Magento’s built-in URL Rewrite Management system or Optimise Web’s Mass 301 Redirects Magento extension anytime and the extension is free online.
